•Kodak is probably one of the best examples of how core rigidity can negatively impact a company. Have the students conduct an in-depth analysis of the products the company has and is currently producing. What were the largest mistakes they made? What can be done currently to help them reduce their rigidity?
•Look at the operating systems for computers. Explain why Windows developed as a standard. Do you think Apple could have done anything to secure its position as the standard?
•One of the largest and most significant recent battles over an industry standard has occurred between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Currently, it appears that Blu-ray is winning the battle and is getting close to securing itself as the standard. Examine the key strategic moves that both companies made in an attempt to secure their position as the standard. Which moves do you feel had the most impact?
•In the semiconductor business there appears to be two standards (Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)). Although Intel has a significant lead, AMD has been and continues to be successful. Explain how two standards can exist in this market and not in others. Also, based on Intel’s lead do you believe that they will eventually take over the market and push AMD out?
